Georgia Department of Behavioral Health & Developmental Disabilities


OVERVIEW

DBHDD operates state hospitals and provides for community-based services across the state through contracted providers. The department serves people living with mental health challenges, substance use disorders, intellectual and developmental disabilities, or any combination of these. As Georgia’s public safety net, our primary responsibility is to serve people who are uninsured. We also serve individuals on Medicaid and others with few resources or options.

Substance Abuse Counselor

Provides initial program orientation to consumers presenting for treatment of addictive diseases to identify substance abuse issues and related personal problems.  Provides group, family, and individual education, skills-based training and supportive counseling to consumers and their families/significant others. Designs counseling/education services that meet the individual needs of the consumer.   Educates families/significant others on the addiction and recovery process.

Meets with consumers at established intervals to discuss progress toward goals.   With input from the clinical coordinator as needed, identifies unmet needs, reviews available resources, and suggests modifications to the treatment plan. Writes clear, concise, complete, grammatically correct, and timely progress notes that relate directly to the treatment outcomes described in the service plan.   Completes discharge summaries and other documentation and reports accurately and timely.


Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university OR certification as an addiction counselor from the Georgia Addiction Counselors Association (GACA) or equivalent certification.
