OVERVIEW

The Georgia Department of Corrections is the largest law enforcement agency in Georgia with approximately 9,000 employees, and is one of the largest prison systems in the United States. The GDC is responsible for oversight of approximately 45,000 state-sentenced offenders within more than 80 facilities across the state. Our non-negotiable mission of public safety is accomplished by maintaining safe and secure facilities and providing basic care, while working to reduce recidivism by providing vocational and educational programming opportunities to offenders.

Under general supervision, provides comprehensive medical services by examining patients, diagnosing conditions and providing treatments. Directs nurses, aides and others in the care and treatment of patients. Refers patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary. Provides emergency medical care. Prescribes or administers treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat or prevent illness, disease, or injury. Examines patients and take their histories, order laboratory tests, X-rays and other diagnostic procedures and consult with other medical practitioners to evaluate patients' physical and mental health. Directs and coordinates activities of nurses, students, assistants, specialists, therapists, and other medical staff. Coordinates work with nurses, social workers, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, psychologists and other health care providers. Advises patients on health care including health promotion, disease, illness and accident prevention. May supervise staff.

Provide clinical direction needed to meet the service delivery requirements of constitutional healthcare. Serve as our valuable liaison between DOC and GCHC. Routinely visit sites to ensure the best possible care is provided. Chair or participate in various committees to include CQI, Infection Control and Pharmacy and Therapeutics. Interface with agency clinical and administrative leadership on issues related to medical services. Functions as a consultant for the medical staff. Statewide travel required. Submit resume AND GDC state application when applying.
Medical degree recognized by the Georgia Composite Medical Board (GCMB) AND licensure or license-eligible to practice medicine at a state institution or in the state of Georgia as provided by state law AND One year of experience at the lower level Physician 1 (HCP160) or position equivalent.
