The mission of the Department of Law is to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia by providing legal representation of the highest quality to the agencies, officers and employees of state government and by honorably and vigorously carrying out the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the Attorney General.  The Department of Law is organized into the Executive Office, five legal divisions, four specialty units and an operations division.


Job Summary

We are accepting applications for our attorney applicant pool. Duties include serving as the attorney and legal advisor for state agencies, departments, authorities and the Governor; specific duties depend on the Division.  Executive Office - The Executive Office includes the following leadership positions: the Attorney General, the Chief of Staff, the Chief Deputy Attorney General, the Counsel to the Attorney General and the Solicitor General.  Regulated Industries and Professions Division.   Sections: Regulated Public Interests; State Licensing Boards; Environmental and Natural Resources. Commercial Transactions and Litigation Division.  Sections: Tax; Real Property; Construction, Transportation and Authorities; Business and Finance.  Criminal Justice Division.  Sections: Capital Litigation; Post-Conviction Litigation; Public Safety.  General Litigation Division.   Sections: Civil Rights; Torts; and Workers' Compensation.  Government Services & Employment Division.  Sections: Health and Social Services; Labor & Employment; Education/Elections/Local Government & Judiciary. Prosecution Division - The Prosecution Division prosecutes fraud and corruption involving the State of Georgia’s departments and agencies, including those committing crimes against the state.  The Unit also prosecutes identity fraud, residential mortgage fraud and securities fraud.   Medicaid Fraud Division -The Medicaid Fraud Division investigates and prosecutes fraud and abuse by providers in the Georgia Medicaid program. Consumer Protection Division - The Consumer Protection Division is the consumer protection agency for the State of Georgia. The Unit helps protect consumers from unfair and deceptive acts and practices in consumer transactions. It also investigates consumer problems, monitors the marketplace to promote fair and honest competition, takes enforcement action against violators and publishes consumer education materials and alert warnings.  Solicitor General’s Unit - The Solicitor General's Unit is the newest addition to our legal teams, handling high-profile and complex cases on behalf of the State and focusing on appellate litigation in state and federal courts and in the and U.S. Supreme Court.  Please click “Organization of the Office” link: https://law.georgia.gov/organization-office for a complete description of our legal divisions.

 

 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Litigates cases:
    • participates in hearings and appears in administrative hearings, state and federal courts to try cases and argue motions and appeals;
    • researches and prepares pleadings, motions and briefs;
    • participates in settlement negotiations;
    • prepares pleadings and discovery responses.
  • Provides legal advice and/or representation to clients/agencies; drafts memoranda of advice.
  • Conducts research on pertinent legal issues; keeps abreast of recent legal developments.
  • Drafts formal opinions in response to legal questions.
  • Responds to inquiries from citizens, legislators, and judges.
  • Attends client, board, departmental, and division meetings as required.
  • Attends continuing legal education seminars as required; makes presentations at same
  • May prosecute fraud and corruption involving the State of Georgia’s departments and agencies, including those committing crimes against the state; May prosecute identity fraud, residential mortgage fraud, and securities fraud

  • May investigate and prosecute fraud and abuse by providers in the Georgia Medicaid program
  • Travel, as required by the position
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited law school and Member of the Georgia Bar


Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who possess one or more items below:

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team is a plus.

All qualified candidates will be held in the Applicant Pool and considered for future vacancies within the Department.

A criminal background check is completed on all candidates; employment is also contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of the background investigation.  Candidates that are being strongly considered for the position will also be required to submit a Department of Law employment application & waiver, Georgia Department of Revenue Tax Clearance letter and copies of official college transcripts.
