JOB SUMMARY: Under supervision, maintains custody and security of juveniles, responds to emergencies and maintains order in Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) facilities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBLILITIES:

Enforcing relevant rules, regulations, policies and state laws necessary for the control and management of juveniles and the maintenance of public safety. Escorts juveniles in transit to locations within and outside of designated facilities, in transit to and from other facilities, and during temporary leaves. Oversees juveniles during work assignments, meals, and recreation periods. Guards facility entrances for the screening of visitors. Inspects, inventories and maintains control of key logs, tools, and related equipment. Patrols assigned areas and report any problems. Prepares facility related reports. May handle and train canines for tracking, search and rescue, guard duty and the detection of contraband.

NOTES:

1. Applications for Juvenile Correctional Officer 1 (JCO 1) positions will only be considered if they have one of the following:

  • Current P.O.S.T certification;
  • 4-year degree from an accredited college or university; or

 
2.Passing test scores on any of the placement tests as noted below:
  • SAT: 430 Verbal; 400 Math
  • ACT: 18 Verbal; 16 Math
  • CPE: 75 Reading; 75 Math; 75 English
  • Compass: 70 Reading; 32 Writing
  • Accuplacer: 55 Reading; 60 Writing
 

3. This position is eligible for a Military Salary Incentive. This incentive is for current/former service members who have served on active duty.

4. Selected candidates for this position are subject to a criminal history check, drug screen and physical examination.

High school diploma or GED AND any combination of training and experience which would enable the applicant to meet the minimum standards of the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council (P.O.S.T.).
